Darwin Canova

Darwin Canova, was a tremendous lifter from Allentown, Pennsylvania, who never got his proper due. In 1928, lifting for the Milo Bar Bell club, at Durner’s Physical Culture Studio in Philadelphia, PA, Canova set a world’s record with a one-arm clean and jerk of 143 pounds (at a bodyweight of only 123 pounds.) A few years later, in September of 1935, now lifting for the York Oil Burner A.C., Canova won the North American weight lifting championship in the bantamweight class at the Canadian National Exhibition grounds in Toronto Canada. Canova weighed in at 120 pounds and performed a two hand military press of 160 lbs and a 210 lb clean and jerk. .
